Newsletter – February 2015

We reach out to you with this newsletter to provide an update of what Color-Country Animal Welfare has been up to. Many of you may be aware of the recent death of CCAW’s founder, Dottie Weaver. Dottie’s compassion and no nonsense approach are why CCAW’s animal-based mission exists today, and our debt to her is immense. Upon my first time meeting Dottie, I knew she would be a hero of mine, and as saddened as we are to lose her, I’m sure many of us are grateful for the memories and inspiration of her spunk, sense of humor and love. We look forward to honoring Dottie in our future endeavors. Initiated by Dottie’s forethought, CCAW’s primary focus to date has been reducing the population of homeless cats in Wayne County through our trap-neuter-return (TNR) program. In 2014, CCAW facilitated the sterilization of 248 cats and 7 dogs, and assisted with 22 adoptions!

Our volunteers work with community caregivers and pet owners to trap and transport the animals to and from the vet, and with the generous help of Best Friends/No More Homeless Pets and the Utah Humane Society, we’ve been able to offer low cost vouchers for vet services. We also provide shelter and daily feeding for numerous cat colonies in our area. Our experience and the data show that TNR programs do have a significant impact in humanely reducing feral cat populations, and we anticipate the need for TNR to gradually decrease in Wayne County. In looking forward, we see that one challenge of living in Wayne County is the lack of pet-related services. CCAW is currently conducting a survey to determine residents’ level of interest in bringing a shelter, doggie daycare and overnight boarding, and veterinary services to our area.

Please share and take the survey at: www.surveymonkey.com/s/WayneCountyPetSurvey. Participants are eligible to win a $50 cash prize. Our upcoming events include CCAW’s first time participating in the Love Utah Give Utah campaign. For one day — March 26th — the public can make donations of $10 or more to Utah non-profits such as CCAW and take advantage of challenge grants and prize offers. We currently have a matching grant for the first $250! For more information, visit http://loveutgiveut.razoo.com and type CCAW in the search box. CCAW immensely appreciates its volunteers; we continue to encounter more need than we can give, and if you are inclined, we would love to receive your gift of time. Please let any of our board of directors members know. Thank you for your support. It really does make a difference for this gem of a community that is Wayne County, Utah.
